Buffista Music III: The Search for Bach

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

Awww... Of course, maybe it's just a testament to the BBQ at The Salt Lick.

In any case, I miss Austin already.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

My ipod just served up a free emusic download, Canada's "Beige Stationwagon." This song starts unpromisingly with a slightly overheated folk-rock-cum-Brit-pop sound reminiscent of my least favorite Decemberist tracks or the Arcade Fire's first album. All of the sudden, at roughly the 3:00 mark, the song transitions to a coda that just fucking makes the song by up-playing the chamber-pop parts from flourishes to the central point of the song, easing the beat off a bit, and having horns and chorus sing and play the main riff. It's a lovely, lovely moment, and it only lasts a minute, but it takes the song to a whole new level.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

My friend Alex just bought tickets for himself and me and Emmett.

This will be Emmett's very first rock concert.

Who are we going to see?

The Stooges.

Punishingly Intricate

Emmett is a very lucky young man! Can't wait to hear the concert report.

The Stooges.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to stay and hear them at SXSW. I am happy to report that I've been spending all my driving time listening to the Texas music that I bought while in Austin and am very happy with my purchases. My favorite is definitely Alpha Rev, but the Rainravens are growing on me.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I think this is the funnies sheet music I've ever seen: [link] (Not that I've seen that much funny sheet music, but still....) The text notes on how to play are by themselves funny. (How do you play "like a dirigible"?) Other instructions include "release the penguins" and "remove cattle from stage."

Another one: [link]

ION, has anyone heard the new Polyphonic Spree EP? (It came out in Oct '06). Love their cover of "Lithium." So cheery.

My friend was telling me about the line wrapped around the block 3 hours early for the Stooges' instore at Waterloo Records this afternoon.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

This will be Emmett's very first rock concert.

Has he seen any Iggy performances? I can't imagine what I would have thought of Iggy at Emmett's age.

Have people heard about the Big Giant Head fee increases for internet radio?

A recent change to the structure of royalty payments for streaming audio broadcasts will surely kill online streaming as we know it, unless something changes, and soon.

Pandora founder Tim Westergren writes, "Internet radio is hostage to a blatantly discriminatory double standard that was written into the federal statute governing webcasting several years ago, following an intensive lobbying effort by the RIAA. We need to redress this, and create a more level playing field - one that of course rewards musicians for their work, and one that also understands the business realities, and benefits of online radio."

Some people think that most internet radio stations will just stop doing streaming audio if this stands.

Yeah. Thankfully, some big guns like NPR are fighting it. [link]
