\"I\'m supposed to make up a melody\" is also known as composing and royalties are where the money is.

That has crossed my mind, Joe.

I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve. - John Prine

Hi, Corwood. Meant to post this for you the other day but got busy. Jonathan Lethem was on Leonard Lopate in a segment provocatively titled "Jonathan Lethem Supports Plagiarism!" talking about this article he wrote. I know you're a fan, & it's a topic you're interested in. What was the name of your friend who was accused of plagiarizing part of his story/novel? That's exactly the kind of thing JL talks about, the blurry line between drawing on cultural material & misappropriating someone else's work. Knowing his work, & from the title of the segment, you can probably guess he's not in favor of erring on the side of (copyright) caution. The part where he goes off on Disney for taking stuff from the public domain & then trying to lock down future use for others is pretty great.

Would love to tie that in to music copyright (and to mention for the 837th time that It Takes a Nation of Millions... couldn't be made today) but I gotta get back to work.

Yeah, Lethem's article in the current Harper's is a thing of beauty. Every paragraph is appropriated from somewhere else.

My friend is Brad Vice, who is defended in the current Oxford American. Also worth a read. In fact: [link]

I just read it - genius! Or certainly very cool. Interestingly, I was familiar with a number of his sources because our interests (music writing, cyberpunk, post-modern theory, etc.) overlap. I think we're close to the same age since we ping at the same points.

I'm well acquainted with Lewis Hyde's The Gift since it was a very popular text when I was in college and he spoke at Kenyon frequently, even taking a professorship at one point.

Note: Lethem even steals from sometime Buffista and NY Times fandom mole Emily Nussbaum!

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

Video Killed the Radio Star

I used to hate that song. Now I kinda like it.

I think several of us have seen it. In fact, it's incredibly dull.
