Kaylee: Can I? Zoe: Sure. He's out, though. Kaylee: He did this for me, once.

Buffista Music III: The Search for Bach

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

hip deep in pie

I would like to add

  • More cowbell: A song containing that essential instrument (and maybe this is played out since iTunes did their list, but I have the perfect song!)
  • Words to music: a song that was originally, or quotes heavily, a literary work. (Example: One of Many by Vic Chesnutt. Lyrics are a Stevie Smith Poem)
  • A song you cannot not dance to.

Excellent categories!

I have my cross-genre cover picked out already

Hey, I had you in mind when I wrote it. And where's msbelle? Does she know about this?

Will we settle on a final list of categories, or will we just pick from the vast lists being provided now?

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Corwood will settle on a final list.

A fellow makes himself conspicuous when he throws soft-boiled eggs at the electric fan.

I *love* these categories, but the ones needing actual knowledge of music theory and/or structure may need some handholding. Could I tell you what part of any song is the bridge, without guessing? No. Unless it's the live version of "Sunkeneyed Girl," where he says "this song doesn't have a bridge."

A bridge is the part in the middle of the song, maybe two-thirds of the way through, that doesn't sound like the verse or the chorus.

A typical pop song is structured something like V-C-V-C-B-V-C. This is also known as ABACAB (Holy Genesis, Batman!).

What Jon said. Ray Charles said a good song is all about the middle 8. He broke that rule himself often, but a great bridge is pure transcendence.
