The really horrible thing is, he could.
He could by taking charge and leading a sound rebuilding of NOLA. However, as others have said above, that would require such a complete change of character that everyone would be wondering what the pod people did with the real one.

He doesn't even get to go to Back To School Night. It's more about showing up so the teacher understands that even though Emmett's parents are divorced they are both involved in all school activities blah blah blah. It's just important to make an appearance at these things, but it's massively fubar on the freeway now. I'm looking at a webcam view from the Bridge and everything is crawling.
