NEW YORK - Challenged in court by CNN, the Bush administration agreed on Saturday not to prevent the news media from following the effort to recover the bodies of Hurricane Katrina victims.
The government won't, however, permit photographers to join them in boats or helicopters during the mission to recover bodies from flooded homes.
CNN filed suit against the
Federal Emergency Management Agency in U.S. District Court in Houston late Friday, concerned about two statements made by government officials that day. The officials said they didn't believe it was right for the news media to show pictures of Katrina victims.
Terry Ebbert, New Orleans' homeland security director, said the recovery effort would be done with dignity, "meaning that there would be no press allowed." Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore later said there would be zero access to the recovery operation.
In a hearing Saturday before U.S. District Judge Keith Ellison, Army Lt. Col. Christian DeGraff promised that recovery teams would not bar the media from watching. Satisfied, CNN agreed to put its case on hold.
Why are several websites wishing me a Happy Patriot Day?
So do you think ita's beaten up any cheetahs yet?
Well, that depends. Are there a large number of tennis courts or squash courts?
Happy Birthday to Trudy and AidanKara!
Why are several websites wishing me a Happy Patriot Day?
Because they're trying to make my head explode?
Why are several websites wishing me a Happy Patriot Day?
I think I recall that name being given to September 11th. It's frustrating and assine for those of us (probably limited to Massachusetts and Maine) who have celebrated Patriots Day (shot heard 'round the world and all that), for as long as we can remember.
Hardly a man is now alive / Who remembers that famous day and year.
...
In other news, today's
Boston Globe
has a somewhat comprehensive chronology of the disaster in the wake of Hurrican Katrina. It seems fairly balanced (not fair-n-balanced), pointing out errors at all levels of government.

Happy Birthday to Trudy and Aidan!
If this is Deena's Aidan, I'm nearly positive his birthday is February 5th (I know it's Feb., 2003 and that he was born before the sixth of the month).
I'm nearly positive his birthday is February 5th
However, my big sister Kara was born around this time of year, so maybe it's her birthday that you're posting about?
[Edit: 63=7*9. Also, this is Nilly's keyboard posting now, neither Aidan nor Kara. And Nilly is not really here, you see. Yes, Nilly's keyboard likes numbers too. It's obligatory, being in a room in the physics department and all that.]
