Giles, if you would like to get by in American society, then you are going to have to follow our traditions. You're the patriarch. You have to host the festivities, or it's all meaningless.

Also, W is going to release some oil from the Strategic Reserves - that should help a bit

It may not help a whole lot if there are some oil refineries shut down.

I remember the crazy days. 500 posts an hour. Nubmer! Natgbsb

Sky boxes wouldn't be so bad. As big as many studio apartments with a bathroom and kitchenette, but there aren't 30K of them. I feellike there should be a message board somewhere that people can post things like:

I have a small room available for anyone needing it in NYC. Free for up to 3 months.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

File this under: at least it isn't WORSE news.

12:11 P.M. - Army Corps: Water has become level with the Lake in the city so no more water should flow into the city, except at high tide.

Silence means security silence means approval

Aah, here were are: [link]

Look at the pictures labeled "Hofheinz' Apartment."

And yes, there was a Presidential Suite. I'd forgotten about that. That was gone after LBJ left office.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

FDA official quits over morning-after decision: [link]

Director of Women's Health Office resigns in protest over agency's delay

...

The FDA last Friday postponed indefinitely its decision on whether to allow the morning-after pill, called Plan B, to be sold without a prescription.

The agency said it was safe for adults to use without a doctor’s guidance but was unable to decide how to keep it out of the hands of young teenagers without a prescription — a decision contrary to the advice of its own scientific advisers.

“I can no longer serve as staff when scientific and clinical evidence, fully evaluated and recommended for approval by the professional staff here, has been overruled,” wrote Wood, who also was assistant commissioner for women’s health.

I was scouting around on LJ and I found Poppy Z. Brite's post -- she got out of the city, but she left all but one of her 28 animals behind.

Swouncing

It's amazing to think of what hadn't happened/didn't exist/came to be in her lifetime.

My grandfather passed away on 2000, and was nearly that old (there were no proper registrations where and when he was born, so his age was only an estimation). He kept expressing his amazement and joy over the differences in the world, all the things that happened during his life. I don't think I can properly imagine how life was when he was not only a child, but my age. Crazy century.

Huh. The cheapest gas in Chicago is $2.67. The most expensive is $3.69. (Both of these are regular unleaded.)

eta: both of these prices were reported today.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Oh, yeah, Beth. Much better for her to be in Hattiesburg than Biloxi.
