tommy, those would be my guesses. But I don't think they displaced that many people in a 3-day span.

Though I don't know enough about the WWII internment camps to be sure on that score.

If you've pressed the button for the floor that the elevator is going to reach last, it is a good idea to not stand right in front of the doors reading the Metro and loudly chewing your gum, even if you were the last person on the elevator. At the very least, you might move a few milimeters out of the way when the doors open on floors you knew were already selected and aren't yours. Unless, that is, you really want one of your co-passengers to grab your paper, roll it up, and beat you with it until you bleed from the eyes.

Gah. Have a half million (or more) people ever been displaced in America before? Maybe in the Civil War....

I heard somewhere that this is the first time there's been a full, long-term evacuation of a major US city since Sherman burned Atlanta. I'm not sure that counts, though, considering Atlanta only had 50,000 or so people in it at the time, and we're talking about nearly 500K in Orleans Parish alone.

EDIT: Atlanta didn't have more than 10,000 back then, but Richmond was also evacuated, and it had 30K.

Later that month, a man named David, who would like to keep his last name confidential, organized a zombie mob in San Francisco. The actors shuffled across the city on July 24, ending up in front of an Apple store, where they smeared fluids on the windows and looked for brains.

They didn't find any.

David says he supports all groups of zombies.

There was a zombie flashmob (one of the first, I think) that stormed a medieval battle reenactment on Mont Royal in Montreal. Hysterical. The reenactors seemed to have a great time playing along.

From the pictures, I'm pretty sure that those weren't re-enactors, but LARPers. I'm quite doubtful that it was SCA as bloggers reported from the look of the gear (cardboard props, etc.)

If it was SCA then there should have been a bunch of duct tape.

You know, it's too bad the Kingdome isn't still up, or else the refugees could have experienced the trifecta of butt-ugly 1960s and 70s domed stadia.
