And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

According to the NYTimes, yesterday was the hottest August 13th in recorded NYC history (which began for temperatures in 1869). It was the hottest day period since August 9th, 2001, and the longest string of 95+ days since 1955.

I think I slept maybe 3 hours, and I woke up with a migraine.

UGH.

Here in MA we're at 77 degrees... with a dewpoint of about 76.

Really? Cause it was still stuffily miserably hot in bed. But I guess it'll take some time to seep all the way into my bedroom.

Hey, hivemind -- how long was meat rationed in England? I thought it was just World War II, but I guess not?

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I think there were shortages for a while after WWII.

I once read an acount of the British mixing sawdust into their sausages to stretch the meat suppy....

Until 1954

Damn.

Why'd it take so long?

I'm watching 84 Charing Cross Road (bizarre things OnDemand gets me into) which makes quite a point of Londoners being rationed in 1950, which surprised me because I thought it was a war thing. Then again, what the hell do I know?

It's blazingly hot here yet again (though the weather gods claim it's going to drop into the 80s tomorrow), and so I think a movie is in order. Because my window-unit air conditioner, while better than nothing, is barely making a dent in the heat.

I woke up tired, though no migraine. Last night, a friend taught me how to crack a singletail bullwhip, which led me to play with it for probably 45 minutes. And now, prdictably, my right shoulder is killing me. ("I'm sorry, Boss, I can't come in to work today -- bullwhip injury.")

Still, once you get the hang of making it crack, it's so cool. I may have to become a cowboy.

Why did it take so long?

Severe fuel shortages. Vast deficits left from the war effort. Very bad weather in the late 1940s.

Cool. Thanks, Ginger!

My goodness, I've been conditioned, haven't I -- I keep expecting something horrible to happen. Anne Bancroft takes a friends' dog for a walk in Central Park and lets it off the leash for a walk, and I expect it to disappear or get eaten or run into the street or something. It doesn't, of course -- it's not that kind of movie.
