He was my least favourite Doctor. Indeed, the only one I actively disliked. Though I think too that the quality of the stories dipped in his period, which doesn't help.

Really? I mostly tend to forget he existed, but the only one I disliked was the Fifth. (Though I've loved the actor in other things, I just disliked that version of the Doctor.)

I ::heart:: the Seventh Doctor. HEART, I say.

Some of his later stories were among the most mature the show has produced, I think. (The Curse of Fenric is my favourite.) Spawned a huge string of novels too.

Oh yes. The Fifth was quite bland (though following Tom Baker just exacerbated that), but the Sixth was thoroughly unpleasant. Treated his companions like crap, acted like the sun shone out of his various orifices, but without the charm of the Ninth or Fourth to make it endearing instead of boorish.

Some of them are (others are awful, of course; it's a big series). I like the Eighth Doctor novels best myself. The 'New Adventures' Seventh Doctor series does some interesting things with Ace; their relationship deteriorates almost irreparably because of his manipulative streak, and she winds up spending some time away from him as a mercenary.

I did think it was a little sad that in the latest Lush newsletter, they referenced both Wallace Stevens' "The Emperor of Ice Cream" and daleks, and had to explain the whole "emperor of ice cream" thing. But didn't have to explain daleks. (Because really, how can you?)

I don't think they quite got the meaning of the poem, anyway.

See, I always thought of him as sort of the Ozzy Osburne of Doctors. Which, fine, was the hair talking to me.

In that light, he was forgettable, but mildly entertaining.

The Fifth Doctor just made me want gag on my own boredom while at the same time somehow not being forgettable. Most annoying.
