I think the cats lure him under there with promises of steak and then laugh at him when he can't get out.
My friends had a scottie puppy whose legs were too short to manage going down the staircase. The cats would lure him upstairs at the slightest opportunity then head back down a few steps and preen on the stairs while he went crazy up at the top.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration
Not for every day. I keep a stash, though, so when I just can't face getting more dishes dirty, I can eat off something I can throw away.
Though now I have a dishwasher and that makes the whole thing moot. Now I just have putting away clean dishes all the time to complain about.
