When someone quits smoking cold turkey, about how long does it take for the nicotine withdrawal symptoms (esp. irritability) to set in and subside?
If we're talking about my mother, 25 years.

DX - zip it. I have met them and they seem sane. They are not all young crazy kids - they are parents and settled type folks. Sure, there will be long hours for deadlines and stuff, but they swear mostly normal work days.
If you have insurance, they can proscribe drugs for that. A friend of mine was on them when he quit, but he never really got irritable, so they just made him super cheery. He had to get off them because his wife who'd just had a baby couldn't take it.
Isn't pleurisy what the sister has in The Glass Menagerie? Cause it sounds like blue roses?
That's it, that's all I got. That and this crippling sense of being a big old faker. Back to Forgotten Calculus I go.
Dumb question: When someone quits smoking cold turkey, about how long does it take for the nicotine withdrawal symptoms (esp. irritability) to set in and subside?
Set in? About as long as the person usually goes between cigarettes. Subside? God only knows. I think "they" say four days or a week or something.
Anne - that really depends on the person and how much they smoked. I quit cold turkey and probably was at my most irritable two days in for about 2-3 days, but I was mostly a social smoker and probably only averaged 1/3 pack a day when I quit.
Consumption is a good one. But my all-time favorite old illness is the screaming shits.
Thanks for the input. (Goes back to writing, w/ some reasonable sounding info in hand.)
I am choosing my quitting outfit! hee. I thought I would quit today, so I had worn one of my favorite dresses. I think tomorrow I will wear a new skirt with lots of embroidery on it - and a bright pink tee and a white cardigan. oh and white slides. also? an imaginary tiara.
in my head I will finish every sentence with "eat it!" hee.
Anne, physical withdrawal symptoms are supposed to be largely over withing a few days- for me, irritability was more mental than physical, though.
