What you did to me was unbelievable, Connor. But then I got stuck in a hell dimension by my girlfriend one time for a hundred years, so three months under the ocean actually gave me perspective. Kind of a M.C. Escher perspective, but I did get time to think.

Anybody mathy around? I've got a geometry question I really should be able to get and feel like a doofus about.

Among other things, I apparently can't properly solve the equation y*y + y*y = 1. Which is getting me down, man. Maybe I need more sleep.

Basically, how do I find the area of a hexagon with sides of length x?

y = 1/sqrt(2).

I think I remember geometry.

Is that 2x^2=1? So x=SQRT(2)/2?

Favorite summer dessert?

Water ice! Also, waterumelon--coconut rum poured over chunked watermelon.

Beach or pool?

Beach, or if that's not possible, the Quarry!

Predictions on the overplayed song of summer '05?

I don't listen to commercial radio at all and even I've heard that Gwen Stefani song. So I'm going with that.

What was your worst family summer vacation?

Oy. Probably the year my parents, aunt, brother and sister-in-law and 2 kids rented a beach house in NC. It actually was mostly fun and relaxing and I loved being with my nieces but my sister-in-law and dad bickered the whole time.

What was your best family summer vacation?

Actually the year before the bad one we rented the same house and my dad only stayed for part of the time and my best friends from here came down for part of the week. Really helped diffuse the tension and we could just enjoy each other and the lounging.

What is this water ice of which you speak? Is it like a sno cone?

Hexagon with side of length x = 6 equilateral triangles with side of length x, so the area is

6*(x/2*xSQRT(3)/2)/2 = (3√3)*x^2/4

(eta: wait, regular hexagon, right?)

There's a formula for the area of a regular n-gon. I had it memorized at some point, but can't remember it now.

Favorite summer dessert?

Late season strawberries with whipped cream.

Beach or pool?

Pool.

Predictions on the overplayed song of summer '05?

Rob Thomas, no doubt.

What was your worst family summer vacation?

We were vactioning in Eureka Springs when I was 12, and Dad woke Mom and me up having his first seizure (caused by an A-V malformation that required suergery and resulted in lifetime partial paralysis). We had a 6am ambulance ride to the hospital with him, and while I was in the ER waiting room they brought in someone who'd had his arm torn off by a thresher. Hopefully that will be the worst vacation I ever have.

your best?

We went to Chattanooga and Gatlinburg when I was very young. I remember riding the incline up Lookout Mountain, seeing the Ruby Falls cave inside, touring Mystery Hill, and driving through the Smokies.

What is this water ice of which you speak? Is it like a sno cone?

Infinitely superior. It's closer to a grainy sorbet, but better than that too.

(With a sno cone, the flavor is just poured over the ice--water ices have the flavors blended in, and the texture is finer.)

What is this water ice of which you speak? Is it like a sno cone?

Kind of. Or like Italian ice I guess. It's either lemon or cherry (although when I was a kid the Wassam's drugstore had all different flavors of delicious icey stuff they called water ice...my favorite flavor was Blue).

I think it's only found in SE Pennsylvania and northern Delaware.

I know my sister-in-law from NJ never heard of it until she came to DE for college. And it drives her crazy! Because of the redundancy. hee hee. We love to torture her by getting her kids to ask for it.

eta Susan describes it better! It's def. more tasty than your normal sno-cones of the world.
