Funny thing about black and white. You mix it together and you get gray. And it doesn't matter how much white you try and put back in, you're never gonna get anything but gray.

Fan Fiction II: Great story! Where's the sequel?

This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.

Hey. New board.

I really like the link from Plei's article, that guy's take on the usefulness of fanfic.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Yeah, good essay. Except for this:

And if they're writing slash (fanfic with sex!), chances are excellent that you're sucking in all of their take home pay that doesn't go to rent, food and cat products.

slash is NOT fanfic with sex. Grr. Wrong in two different ways.

I was charmed (albeit somewhat perplexed) by the fannish sensibility of many of the music choices -- it's like the director was trying to vid Canada. --loligo on the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Also, I don't have a cat.

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

Interesting article, and it backs up what I've often thought about fanfic: that it's a hell of an effective marketing tool. I've actually started watching shows--and buying DVDs--because my favorite fic writers ventured into a new fandom and dragged me along.

Oddly enough, Japanese manga publishers seem to encourage the actual for-profit sale of doujinshi, which are essentially fanfiction in graphic novel form. They see it as an indicator of a series' popularity, and as a way of marketing that they don't have to pay for. Plus, they'll often recruit the most talented writers and artist to produce original series.

Always Anti-fascist!

I know people here have watched Homicide because I posted crossover fanfic.(That may sound vain, but it does make me proud.)

Anyone have a link for "Stealing Harry"? I did, but it seems to have vanished.

Yeah, the link we had at PolyRecs was broken. I know I found a new one, but I haven't updated the site yet.

Also, I don't have a cat.

I know! Plus, I don't buy, well, anything associated with the show I'm slashing. All the SG-related stuff I own are gifts. Oh, wait, I bought a used dvd of the original movie.

"Fuck Western ideologically-motivated gender identification!" Sulu gasped, and came.

Wordy McWord.

...I do have a cat. Oh dear. Mostly I don't have spinoff goods other than DVDs and videos, though, except...er...I've scampered around ebay this holiday, and I now own a rather lovely little purple Buffy rucksack and I have an Atlantis iron-on patch. Um. Which I'm going to iron on to a shirt, so I can play at dress up while I'm at work.

You can also get it at the author's fic LJ. [link]

Skyehawke's format may be better, though.

Also, Google brought me to Schnoogle - nothing but novel-length HP fanfic! This could be very, very bad for me.
