In Evolution he's The Other Guy Who Gets Captured By Stereotypical Central American Terrorists; in most of the rest of his episodes, he's The Other Scientist Who Isn't Sam Carter. He's kind of short and balding and roundish, in my head at least. (I have a lousy visual memory.)

I'm not sure if it's what vidders in particular like, but one that's quite popular and very affordable is by Norcent. It plays a million file formats in addition to DVDs, so you could pop a data disc full of AVIs in without actually having to convert to DVD format. Try searching on Amazon for Norcent.

I haven't heard anything about Vividcon DVDs yet, and I don't actually own a Norcent, so I am little help.
