I've done it a few times. I guess the difference is that I always knew I would watch Dr. Who at some point, so I avoided spoilers, including fic.

Heh. The slant of that fanfic, IIRC, was that his refusal to acknowledge Sam's superior genius meant he richly deserved to be deported to Siberia, where he would either suffer a wintry death or be poisoned by the lemon chicken recipe she was sending to the base's mess hall cooks.
