'Objects In Space'

Spike's Bitches 23: We've mastered the power of positive giving up.

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risque (and frisque), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

What is even happening?

I thought the same thing as ita. I saw enough clothing, signs, accessories (like Kaylee's parasol in the pilot) to get the idea that Chinese culture was predominant in this 'verse. Swearing in Chinese just fit with all that.
Agreed. I thought the Chinese stuff added some interesting elements too the show, and I like how certain things in ME shows are not overexplained to the audience as is common in much of prime time television. The writers seem to trust that the audience can figure it out on their own. Plus the use of the Chinese language is a creative way for the characters to swear and still get past the censors.
That's how I looked at it, too. There are a lot of Chinese people in the world currently, yo. So I didn't think it odd that in the future, more Chinese would be incorporated into the cultures of non-Asians.

Also? I can't see any obvious French or German influence where I am, but the words are in my vocab.

Still? When something bugs, it bugs, even if it doesn't bug other people.

"You see? THAT's what they want. Love, and a bit with a dog."

Like, does Elphaba really start out as good/wanting to be good?

Absolutely. In fact, I'd say that even though she 'chooses' to be wicked ("No Good Deed") she never really even pulls it off. All she wants are the damn shoes. There were lots of things that were surprises to me, even having read the book and listened to the cd. We had limited view seats in the dress circle, so G was upset at first, but on the plus side, it meant that we were almost even with Elphaba for the last verse of 'Defying Gravity'. Just thinking about it gives me chills and gets me weepy. I'm a tool.

I'll put together an lj entry later tonight with more details. Now, I have to pack.

Now tagless for your comfort.

calm & cool-ma for Betsy.

Mmm...I think maybe my blind acceptance of a Blader Runnerish future made me not even think twice about the Asian influence in FF. I don't even question it. When I read William Gibson, he drops international tech names left and right (e.g. Zeiss lenses) which, although I don't know first hand, assume that they're the cream that has risen to the global technology top. I don't really question its use because it simply "is" for me, if the story is well written and the culture/tech stuff seemlessly incorporated.

Susan, I know you didn't have much luck with your church-based mom group but have you checked for the Seattle group of punkymoms? A friend of mine in Dallas is a member and she recommended them to me.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

if the story is well written

This, of course, being the clincher, and I didn't think Firefly was well-written. Everything about it felt clunky and awkward to me, which is obviously a rather vast mileage variance from most of the rest of the board.

Good Trouble and Righteous Fights

Calm~ma to Betsy.

Hmm. My assumption would be that I'm not punky enough, though with their website down for construction, I can't really get a feel for the group's personality.

They have separate meetup.com sites where you can peruse the individual members of your own city's group. Just from the four members in my city, I get the feeling that's it's only "loosely" punky. More progressive than anything else. But then, I'm in the Midwest (although my group's founder moved back here from Portland, so I'll know when I meet them).

I only felt some clunkiness--and it was only on a few episodes. I don't know if I gave it a pass because it was Joss or because I love sci-fi. I will admit, because of the episode shuffle, I didn't feel the immediate FF love. But after watching the better eps, I fell hard.

I'm getting the pig!

Cashmere is me in regards to the Firefly love. The love wasn't immediate but rather a slow burn with a sudden blazing bonfire for a few select episodes.

Calm~ma to Betsy and very good to know that Anne made it safely to her new home.
