Curry goat isn't just West Indian. Or our influence has stretched beyond borders. I've had it just as often in Indian restaurants as in Jamaican ones.
Huh. I eat my words. With a portion of curry goat. (Although I've never seen it on a menu in an Indian restaurant in Britain, that I recall - maybe a UK/US thing? Or maybe I just don't stray far enough from the chicken/veg/fish bit of the menu?)
And yet we never go into the city, unless it's a) the zoo, b) the airport, or c) when I was taking Ben to Children's Hospital for his foot. We've been to Old City *once* in the eight years we've lived here, and went to Warm Daddy's for blues. We're pathetic.
Well, I lived in the city proper for 8 years, and there were still things I missed or rarely visited, so I can't really call anyone pathetic. You think it'll always be there, and next thing you know it's still there, but
you
aren't. I'm still annoyed at my collegiate self for never going on any of the weekend trips to NYC to see Les Miz or anything else Broadwayish. They were always when I didn't have enough money or was busy with midterms, so I figured I'd go some other time. Guess I'll have to put that on my list for when I'm an Important Bestselling Author going to NYC to schmooze with my editor and agent, huh?
I've only had goat stew at what I'd have to describe as a pan-Caribbean restaurant. It was very good, but VERY spicy (scotch-bonnet peppers were an ingredient).
India Quality in Kenmore Square is the best Indian food I've ever had. All the Central Square ones that get all the attention? Never really liked them, except as a fall-back.
Along with all the other dishes mentioned, I'm fond of onion naan, and chicken Vindaloo, which tends towards the hot end of the spicy scale. It will never replace chicken tikka masala in my heart, though.
A friend told me that English tandoori was no longer uber-red. I'm assuming that whatever health/safety thing they put in place was already here in the US before I got here, because I sure miss that colour.
Tandoori chicken is my favourite Indian dish.
I've had goat curry. I wasn't thrilled with it, but that's mainly because I rarely like curry. Tandoori chicken and some other Indian food, however, is definitely of the yum.
You think it'll always be there, and next thing you know it's still there, but you aren't.
I think this is just One Of Those Things. Growing up, I did all the Smithsonian museums on class field trips, but never on my own as a teen/young adult. Living in NYC now, I never visit any of the museums unless there are people in town who want to go. We have been making an effort to see more theatre, but it's so darned expensive that we only make it two or three times a year at most. (Broadway theatre, I mean -- we see everything my sister's company does, and part of their philosophy is that cheap tickets != cheap theatre, so they always price their shows less than the cost of a movie ticket.)
Hell, I live in a city that our own alterna-weekly had to admit is completely uncool, but we have good Indian restaurants...but being a Bitch helped me find out.
If I get too happy, I might lose my soul. Also, have to change my tag again. The second thing...fish in a barrel.give me something har...wait, let me rephrase that for the Married Guy. :)
Give me a challenge.
This just in: allergies suck! Film at eleven.
Hey, Teppy's mother was an allergy!
(you knew that was coming, right?)
