"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

If a SPED student needs 7 years to learn what we think a high school graduate needs to know, and what the average student is able to learn in 4 years--I wish it were more expected that the SPED student would take the time he needs.

This is sometimes handled in the "developmental English" courses in community colleges (and even regular colleges). That phrase is a euphemism for "remedial," although in the college setting it's much more about Do you have the skills to actually pass any other college courses? So, practical, but uncompromising. Also, in the college setting, you can take the course at 25, or 45, and not be too out-of-place; and you can take the course 10 times if you need to.

Folks, if she is too immature to make the decision, shouldn't that raise the question of her being too immature to endure a pregnancy she doesn't want?

More to the point, she got pregnant at 13 under the custody of the foster care system. So, I'm not too impressed with the parenting skills of the foster care system overall, and disinclined to trust its judgement.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Yes, this. I couldn't get in to read the article -- does it mention who the father is?

Yes. I just wish this would be the norm.

I haven't paid attention to higher ed issues in a long time, because I was busy looking at pre-school and elementary issues, and just being a mother to little ones. At some point, was there a local discussion (maybe in relation to the MCAS requirements for graduation) about giving some students certificates of graduation, and only giving diplomas to students who'd demonstrated competency in the required subjects?

Hil, no, it doesn't mention who the father is. That's why I went to read it. I was wondering if statutory rape was at issue, but it didn't say. For anyone who wants to read the article, bugmenot gave me this log-in:

I just heard on the news there's a traffic backup because of a woman giving birth! Eek!

Two days ago here, it was buffalo roaming loose. This morning, there was a backup on a bridge because there was a large Canadian goose (is there any other kind?) menacing traffic and refusing to move.

I'm just waiting for the bears to show up.

hip deep in pie

I had a really deep massage yesterday, and I feel like a new woman. I slept really well last night, better than I have in weeks, I think. The only problem is, I want to sleep more.
