Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

OMG, we have to get that for Nilly.

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

you can rent more cheaply than you can buy. I think, over time, you cannot rent at the same standard of living, more cheaply than you can buy, without a real estate crash.

That's the funny part -- ideally, I'd buy in the neighborhood I'm in, but the prices are too high. To buy, I'll have to move to a poorer neighborhood, or be pretty lucky.

The real reason I want to buy is that there's no point in having nice furniture that's going to be scuffed up every time you move. And, I'm about at that point where I'm ready to have nice furniture. Like bookcases that don't fold, and stand up straight by themselves without any help.

I remember the crazy days. 500 posts an hour. Nubmer! Natgbsb

Happy Days of many different kinds.

I am happy I own and no longer rent - glad I don't care if my mortgage seems stupid or sad to others.

I am brimming over with sarcasm and smart-assedness today, I should really be allowed to avoid all human contact, but instead I have a meeting in an hour.

I am dying to buy a house. But must wait until mr flea gets a job and we decide where we want to live. I want to fix my leaky roof, etc.

I think the economic side of to buy/not to buy is out of kilter for those who live in the major metropolises of the coasts right now. The market is really insanely high. In the Boston area, many people cannot now think of buying who could have done so 10 years ago. Like, say, Nutty.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Happy Birthday Betsy!

Happy Passover!

My parents used to constantly tell me that it made bad financial sense for me to rent rather than buy. Until I had to bail them out to the tune of $4000 for a new heating core their little fixer-upper needed. Nowadays I can't go over to visit without hearing about some new maintenance problem they had to hire someone to fix. Whereas if there's anything wrong with my apartment that a little dusting and a floor mop won't correct, I can call my landlord and all will be well the next day, free of charge. I think entropy and the stress and expense involved in dealing with it have to be factored into the rent vs. own argument.

Or, to an equal or nicer neighborhood, but a little further outside of Boston (not far, just say 5-10 miles more, and still on the bus lines, and commuter rail, and in some cases, the subway lines).

How big is your apartment, Nutty?

Yep, those are some of the intangibles, that can only be defined and prioritized by the individual.

I certainly wouldn't say buying is always better for everyone, it's just taking out a mortgage isn't always worse.
