Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

wouldn't Benedict mean "good word" or something like that.

Blessed.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

So, we call him Benedict now? That's a lame Pope name.

I'ma gonna call him "eggs".

A dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to flee from zombies. — Ginger

I kind of like Benedict.

I kinda wonder what modern pope would have the balls to call himself Pope Immaculate.

OTOH, Ratzinger is really conservative. Ick.

What is even happening?

This used to be true but isn't any more. At least not for all orders. And a bunch who weren't originally allowed to pick their own names were later able to do so. Like my great aunt who's original nun name was Mother Kevin but she switched back to her own name sometime in the late 60s / early 70s I think.
A woman I worked with went to a Catholic college (or boarding prep school--I disremember). There was apparently a cemetery for the nuns, on the grounds. She saw one headstone with the name Mary Circumcision. Bet that one didn't pick her own name.

If I only had a brain...

Popes generally pick a name that aligns them with a previous pope; thus John Paul I was saying that he was going to continue in the traditions of his two immediate predecessors.

I have no idea whose side, theologically, the last Benedict was on.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

The Catholic Church: proving that everything old IS new again, the cardinals elect a Scary-Ass Bigoted Zealot to be the head of the Church.

We've already taken care of that part.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't calling him a Nazi a little unfair? He was just in the army; he wasn't a member of the Nazi party. eta: (I think)

And that other thing he was in (I forget what) was mandatory, right?

brillig

the cardinals elect a Nazi to be the head of the Church.

Schindler was a member of the Nazi party, by the way. Party membership kept people alive back then. Just saying.
