Emily, I whited out the plotty part of the quote from my NUMB3Rs post.

Gus, Peter's delivery is even more consistently ... odd than it was on Ally McBeal. And that's a lot of odd.

Mary isn't boring, she's GOOD, Mary is what a young lady was suposed to be back then--quiet, thoughtful, helpful, demure.

In this adaptation, she's not as helpful at Laura. Definitely quiet and demure, but she doesn't do anything. Except for one outburst at the freaky neighbour (Just because it's what we're all thinking, her mother tells her, doesn't mean it's right to say it). Almost like a spine, or spirit.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

In the books Laura is jealous of how well Mary sews, and there's a LOt of sewing. Of course, sewing is not particularly interesting to watch.
