Buffista Movies 4: Straight to Video

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Not to be rude/nitpicky, but it's "Frankly."

Yeah, like I said, I'll look up the exact wordings later.

The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

quotes that people other than myself use regularly

"You're gonna need a bigger boat."

and

"This was no boating accident."

"The stuff that dreams are made of."

"Houston, we have a problem." (Although I always hear it in the original as "we've had a problem," and the quote was widespread long before it was used in a movie.)

"I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

"Make my day."

"I'll be back."

"I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

"We're off to see the wizard!"

"Follow the Yellow Brick Road."

"Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!" Not so much the animals, but when a set of three keeps coming up, someone often chimes in with a concluding "Oh, my."

"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain."

"Really most sincerely dead."

"A Horse of a Different Color."

"If [he] only had a brain."

Ooo! Good ones!

I'm trying to decide if "Play it again, Sam" should be in the list, since it's not the actual quote.

I've added:

""Wax on, wax off.""

"Show me the money"

"Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!"

And per my DH's advice, am striking "I've got a bad feeling about this" and replacing it with "May the Force be with you."

I think Casablanca may be the most-quoted movie ever, as I'm wondering if "Round up the usual suspects" makes the list. We use "Show her in" a lot, but that's a job thing; consular officers and local staff tend to refer to attractive female visa applicants as "show-her-ins."

"Nobody's perfect."

"If you build it, they will come."

"We're not worthy!"

"They're digging in the wrong place!"

Okay that last one could just be me.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

"Give me back my HAND!"

also

"Who's laughing NOW??!?!?!"

and

"Grooooovy."

Can you sense a theme here?

"Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!"

I've definitely been on the interbunny too long - I had to read this 3 times before I didn't see "Badgers?"

Ann, that's a ferret.

"You can't handle the truth!"

Not too famous, but deserves to be among the best: "My dear, that's something you need never worry about."

"You ain't heard nothin' yet!"

Another NTFBDTBATB: "I know. And you know I know. And I know you know I know. And Henry knows it. We're a very knowledgeable family."

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

Somehow I think the "hill of beans" speech in Casablanca is better known than "Of all the gin joints." Anyway, when AFI does their top 100 films, and they get to Casablanca (usually #2), they show the "hill of beans" speech.

In terms of classic lines, I think "Top of the world, ma!" is the sort of line that people know despite having no idea what movie it comes from. I would say it is very meta, but I don't think you can be meta if you have no idea what you are talking about.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I don't think you can be meta if you have no idea what you are talking about.

Don't you have to be meta, if you don't know what you're talking about?

My head hurts. I should have tea.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I'm trying to decide if "Play it again, Sam" should be in the list, since it's not the actual quote.

Well, not from Casablanca, anyway.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

"Luke, I am your father."
