The Haunting is an adaptation of a Shirley Jackson story, right? Which one?
THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE. Everyone here is talking about the 1963 adaption, and not the craptastic recent one with Lili Taylor and Catherine Z-J.
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Got it. I recently read We Have Always Lived in the Castle and couldn't remember if that was the right one, but clearly not.
The Haunting of Hill House, I think.
As for Blair Witch, I only saw it once so I'm probably misremembering aspects of it, but I think that the Mike-in-the-corner connection was to the serial killer of kids back in the 1940s, who said that he had "been told" (supposedly by the witch) to make one kid stand in the corner while he was killing one of their friends. Just tying that little toss-away fact into the final moment just capped the entire freaked-out feeling I had by the end of that movie.
I remember that being extremely freaky, but now I have no memory of why. Anyone care to remind me?
There was a story told by one of the towns people early in the movie about a child killer hermit (and not the Blair Witch, though she was supposed to have been the force behind it) who always killed two at a time, and made one stand in the corner while he killed the other.
Buffistas x-posting all over. Heh.
The walls bulging and the sounds in The Haunting are what really creeped me out. I haven't read the book though. I've only seen parts of the remake and with all the fancy effects the remake isn't scary -- it's too much LOOK! EFFECTS!!
There was another movie, I guess a remake of an older movie -- the one where they all go over night to house that used to be a mental hospital. Even though it's not a great movie parts of that freaked me out.
The remake was one of the first movies I ever saw with a girl. She screamed very cutely, and clutched my hand, and thus the experience was worth the money.
Movie did suck, though. At some point I'll check out the original.

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. And yeah, not great but there are some freaky moments, especially when Geoffery Rush gets locked in the isolation tank and when you find out that Max Perlich hasn't been doing the hauntings because his face got eaten off.

With Vincent Price!
Oh, I just remembered. The scene in The Others where the little girl is playing with the little wooden toy thing in the wedding veil, and is all possessed by the old woman. That's freaky as hell, even if it was spoiled by the trailer.
