Buffista Movies 4: Straight to Video
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Oh dear....
So, I was flipping past UPN this evening, and they're showing one of my all time favorite cheese-tastic movies, Lifeforce. You know, the buck-ass nekkid space-vampire movie starring Steve Railsback.
Turns out it was produced by Golan and Globus, the producting team that brought us The Apple.
It's all connected.
Well, now I'm earwormed again.
It's a natural, natural, natural desiiiiiiire / Meet an actual, actual, actual vampiiiiiiiiire! / Let the apple set your soul on fire...fire...fire...FIIIIRRRRRE!!!
As I recall, it was more the area right above the heart that was getting set on fire in Lifeforce.
Saw Can't Stop the Music over the weekend.
Camp classic. But what else would you expect from the Village People?
Pleasant surprise -- Bruce Jenner can actually act, too!
We watched Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness the other night. Just getting geared up for Halloween.

Also, lots of interesting British actors (including Patrick Stewart). Which is about the only actual good thing about it. I kept thinking "this is what it would look like if Hammer tried to do one of their sexy vampire movies as a space epic" while I was watching it back in the day (it's been a while). The biggest problem by far, at least in my memory, is that it takes itself SO seriously. Granted, that's also what made it such a hoot.
Speaking of Hammer and vampire, we just watched
Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter.
This featured some Dane faking a British accent as Captain Kronos, Total Nutjob, and had Draco Malfoy and Sandy Duncan as suspicious characters. It wasn't one of the better efforts, with a lot of rules-changing, characters introduced 3/4 of the way through the film, etc. Mostly it felt like a movie from a comic book, you know, like there was about 2000 pages of backstory that wasn't on screen. And OMG so slashy, even with Caroline Munro.
Next up,
The Dunwich Horror,
with Sandra Dee.

Heh, they were trying for something really different on that one. It was one of Brian Clemens (of THE AVENGERS fame) few attempts for Hammer (or movies in general).
Almost worth watching just for the grusomely funny scene where one of Kronos' allies gets infected, volunteers as a guinea pig, and they spend 20 minutes trying out different ways to kill him in order to see what actually kills THIS type of vampire. And it totally feels like a middle issue of a long-running comic book. I think that was semi-deliberate, but it sure was odd.

And Dean Stockwell during his decadent hippie/druggie/drop-out days! Never seen it - it's not supposed to be very good.
I'm sure it will be horrid beyond all telling, and then I will come here and tell you guys about it.
It was really different from your average Hammer film, I'll give them that. I wasn't sure if the guinea-pire scene was supposed to be as funny as it was, but all in all, worth watching for the completist Hammer fan.

I
think
it was, but I may just be flashing back to the Avengers which had more than it's share of black humor.
