Always gonna like the Untouchables(act surprised!) As a writer of dialogue, I admire Mamet. As a member of my gender, I think he's an asshole. Call it the Ellroy Exemption.
'Never Leave Me'
Buffista Movies 4: Straight to Video
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
That's not Mamet, but Neil LaBute.
Damn. So it is.
You folks don't like Bash, then? I really rated it.
As a member of my gender, I think he's an asshole.
::contemplating Mamet as a member of erika's gender. Becomes conscious of the implications of "member" in this context...::
Speaking of...pedantic much? I meant to write "As a writer, I admire him. When I speak as a member of womankind, I think he is an asshole. But a talented asshole." I've got no current designs on Mamet's member, but I've not seen "Oleanna" yet so that could totally change. Much like the weather in Chicago. Damn, Hec, why come you got to harsh on my sloppy syntax, huh? If we were talking, you wouldn't get to do that...you set the bar too high, my friend. I'd do a little surgery on Mr. "In The Company of Men" though.
If we were talking, you wouldn't get to do that
I might think it though. Not in a critical way, but an enjoying-the-accidental-implications way.
If we were talking, you wouldn't get to do that...
Hell yeah he would!
t edit Heh. x-posty.
Hell yeah he would!
Yeah, okay, probably I would. But again - not in a pedantic way.
Taking the piss, though? Yeah. Me.
I think Mamet as a woman might be a lot like...well, me.(Not that I'm as brilliant) But my most common note in writing group was about my expletives, and he seems to enjoy a good caper, too.ETA: No fair! Mocking the afflicted... I'm saying this for no reason, mind you, but my hair grows really fast.
Mamet's very hit or miss for me. His flicks are clever and dense, but often emotionally frigid.
This, exactly, plus all the gender-issues discomfort and the unpleasantness of having to consciously turn off the gender-issues part of my brain in order to let the rest of my brain become fully engaged.
I know, I know, Neil LaBute, ptui, but I have such a big irrational crazy love for Nurse Betty. I heart Renee Zellweger and Morgan Freeman to little bitty bits in it, Tia Texada is marvelous, and Crispin Glover goes way outside his normal range and plays someone demonstrably not Crispin Glover. I realize that between the LaBute and the Zellweger this movie is probably dead, DEAD to most of the Buffistas and that it may in fact be just me and P-C against the rest of the world, but I love it anyway.
::wraps arms protectively around "Nurse Betty," glares pugnaciously at the entire rest of the world::
I liked it, too. Although in an uncomfortable way...I'm in fandoms, too, you know. And if I met Secor, I'd scream out "Timmy!" I know I would... (I do actually know he's not Tim, though) But Morgan Freeman as hitman...might as well send me an invitation to see that movie. Hitmen are good times around our house, though.
