Ah, yes, of course. The gypsies, they gave you your soul. The gypsies are filthy people. Ptui! We shall speak of them no more.

Buffista Movies 4: Straight to Video

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

Meg Ryan/Billy Crystal makes sense to me, I suppose, although not as #1. I'm a little appalled that Pretty Woman is on there, though. Don't know who I'd choose--I think I've missed out on a lot of the classic romantic movies, so I'd vote for pairings like Franka Potente and Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity, or Angela Bassett and Ralph Fiennes in Strange Days. Or, you know, Sam and Frodo.

Hey Dana, I don't know if you stay current in the Music thread these days, but I posted in there a couple days ago about Tracy Grammer's new album--thought you'd be interested. Definitely pick up a copy when you can.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I've read a couple reviews that have singled him out as one of the best things in an underwhelming movie.

He's probably due for a write up in Cintra Wilson's series on Undervalued Character Actors.

Uncertainty could be our guiding light.

Several people in the audience (myself included) exclaimed "Lumberg!" when Gary Cole showed up in The Ring Two.

"I'm useless alone." // "We're all useless alone. It's a good thing you're not alone."

Thanks, Kate. I owe myself a big music buy, maybe when I graduate. I'll put it on the list.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Angela Bassett and Ralph Fiennes in Strange Days

There's a couple I can get really enthusiastic about.

Oh. No. I've found my pairing: Li Mu Bai/Yu Shu Lien in CTHD. I can't think of a topper.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Come on, people, Hepburn/Grant in Philadelphia Story.

Few of the noir pairings work as great couples, because they may have the Hot Hot Lovin' but usually one of them is playing the other and there is no actual love there.

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

Grace Kelly/Cary Grant scenes in To Catch a Thief are all pretty damn hot. And OMG that scene in On the Waterfront where Brando and Eva Marie Saint have that heartbreaking row and he kisses her and they slide down the wall, weeping. It kills me.

Yeah but so do spiders.

Speaking of noir, JZ watched the original Postman Always Rings Twice with me recently and the legendary Lana Turner/John Garfield chemistry was entirely on display. They're like crazed weasels - you can tell they're about an inch away from pouncing on each other in every scene.

Oh, that's a good one.
