Buffista Movies 4: Straight to Video

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Also, I've realized that Christian Bale is the only guy who could give Ewan a run for his M money in FCM.

Heh, my appreciation for how un-uptight Ewan is increased exponentially when he talked about what a good snog Bale is.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

I think any game of FCM involving both Ewan and Christian Bale should include the option of them marrying each other.

Trying desperately not to die from the envy here too.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Lucky, lucky Jess.

So, a friend and I have instituted "double feature nights" where a small group of us meet once a month or so and the host chooses a double feature where the movies make an interesting combo for thematic reasons--and should also make for a good evening of viewing. We're doing the first one and the double feature we chose is The Hot Rock and The Commitments.

Both are films where a central figure gathers a group to pull off something which seems impossible and where the experience changes people for the better. They both reflect the national character of their times and use their settings as characters.

WE also strongly considered Zelig and Little Big Man, which both have a fictional character involved in real historical events.

Any dream double features you would put together?

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

I've always paired up Fresh and Searching for Bobby Fischer in my head, since they both deal with young boys who play chess, and the African-American men who mentor them. But both films couldn't be more different from each other--one a fairly lighthearted look at child geniuses in a wealthy environment, and the other a heartbreaking look at what poverty, crime, and loss of hope can do to a child.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Showgirls and Starship Troopers.

Compassionately intolerant

Giving the double feature question some thought...

In the meanwhile. My beloved Bartleby got seriously poked in the eye with a big, fat stick by his best buddy, Bob, in the park this morning. He was immediately bewildered and all squinty-eyed, then came to cower at my feet, begging me to wrap him up in my protective arms while he shook off the pain and confusion.

Exactly how I feel, having just finished watching Earthsea.

owowowow. Make it stop.
