I saw Crash this afternoon--I thought it was an excellent parable about race issues today. Yes, the characters were all two-dimensional; yes, the level of coincidences involved was astronomical; and yes, the writer/director kept hammering home the same points until the audience feels numb, but it really left an impact on me. For me, though, the worst scene was when the Matt Dillon character groped Thandie Newton in a sheer power play with her husband . That really hit my squick factor in a big way, and could very well give me nightmares.

For as heavy as that movie was, though, I was made very happy when they showed The March of the Penguins trailer beforehand! I saw it when it was linked way upthread, and nearly died of the cute then, but seeing it on the bigscreen was even better. The audience members around me were all buzzing about it, and I even heard a few "That's another film to see this summer!" around me.

Just watched the newest Island trailer, and, wow, it really is Logans Run II: Bigger, Better, and More 2005. And Ewan's accent seems almost painfully bad in it, shamefully.

Both stars are pretty durned hot, though.

I'll see it if and only if the reviews convince me.

I have a Return of the Sith question: Wouldn't you think that George Lucas has enough money to have gotten James Earl Jones for that five words or so? I mean, really.

Actually, he did, Jones just wasn't listed in the end credits.

Summer movies I wanna see:

• Layer Cake: British heist movie. What's not to like? There was also something about the director of this is directing something else but I can't remember now...
• Mysterious Skin: Araki is hit or miss but this one sounds good. Also, Michelle Trachtenberg!
• Howl's Moving Castle: Miyazaki!!

Corwood, In a Lonely Place is very good and is also Richard B. from Versus fave movie of all time.

Movies I've watched so far this weekend:

• Laura: Noir goodness.
• Captain Blood: Errol Flynn! Pirates! Woot!
• Team America: World Police: America, Fuck Yeah! The first 15 minutes are the funniest, IMO.

ETA: Director of Layer Cake is directing X-Men 3.

That's it for now. I'd never seen the movie before, so the way the ending played out was a complete surprise. I don't think that a modern Hollywood studio would have let things play out like they did back then.

Huh. I didn't think it sounded like him.

The Barbra Streisand-Kris Kristofferson version of A Star Is Born. She can sing. He tries to sing material that doesn't really suit his voice. They establish sexual magnetism better than love.

Other than that, it's two-plus hours of Barbra vs. Kris fighting over who can sport the lowest neckline. Kris wins, because the MPAA lets him go shirtless more often without prohibitive rating problems.

It really was good. I have yet to put my finger on why I found the ending so satisfying, but I did.
