From the New Yorker review of Sin City:
Here is something that we never thought to see. Something that exists beyond the bounds of logic: a scary Elijah Wood. Presumably, the actor looked around, seeking a film that would dispel the ripe aroma of Frodo Baggins, happened upon “Sin City,” and found the role of Kevin – a mute, bespectacled type who removes the heads of young women and dines upon the rest of them. Wood is ominously good at the stillness of this maniac, which only doubles the shock. It’s like discovering that Gandalf used to lure young hobbits into a shed and show them his special wand.

My 76-year-old mom is amenable to seeing
Sin City
with us this weekend. She is pretty openminded--she really liked
Pulp Fiction,
for example, and likes new stuff and stylistically interesting work.
She has already said she has no problem going ot the lobby if it gets too graphic (bless her heart) but I am worried the whole thing will just be too horrible for her, and we are better off looking for something else. I don't want her to spend the whole damn movie in the lobby, y'know what I'm sayin?

I haven't seen Sin City yet, so maybe I shouldn't weigh in, but from what I've read here, and what you say about her, I can't imagine there would be a problem.
I don't know Robin. It's way more violent and gory than Pulp Fiction, the violence
is all just cartoonised so that the impact is somewhat less visceral. And there is little humor to break up the violence.
Also,
the portrayal of women is pretty abysmal. They're all victims, whores or objects.
