Wow. It's been years since I've seen Ben Hur. I suspect it'll be difficult now for me to watch Ben Hur and Messala making eyes at each other and not yell, "Oh, fer fuck's sake. Just shag already!", which may not be strictly in the spirit of Easter, whatever that is.
Buffista Movies 4: Straight to Video
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Something is afoot at the Circle K.
Vonnie, the story goes that the actor playing Messala was told to play the character as if he and Ben Hur were former lovers. So, subtext may be a little less sub than usual.
I was going to say. Perhaps not in the spirit of Easter, but not exactly a new reading of the work.
When did the silent version come out? Like, 1920 or something, right?
TCM showed the 1925 version. Which apparently wasn't the first version made.
It's weird. I'm betting it'll (Ben Hur) never get made again -- people don't read the novel any more. Then again, that's true of lots of other remakes.
That always interest me, Betsy -- how some stories are incredibly popular for a generation or two, and then get lost or forgotten, while others live on.
ION, I saw Napoleon Dynamite a few nights ago. Didn't like it -- I agree with the people who have said here that it tried too hard to be quirky and didn't really have anything else going for it. (Okay, the acting is probably pretty good, but decent acting in a lame semi-comedy doesn't really save it for me.)

And also, they made a very conscious decision not to tell Charlton Heston because "he just wouldn't get it."
And Heston denies the whole story.
OMG, actual talking about movies!
Yeah, I got nothin' else right now.
