Well since Mark just watched Wrecked we have been through an "actual car crash!".
The comment section for "Smashed" is some of the ugliest shit I've seen in a long time. I would have expected it for "Seeing Red," but no -- shit got mightily ugly in the "Smashed" comments.
If Mark is smart, he won't enable commenting for "Seeing Red."
Several people have suggested that. I was dreading that post myself, but I didn't expect the shitstorm in "Smashed."
Also, some asshole took it upon himself to spoil Mark about the attempted rape because he'd mentioned it in a
Twilight
post three years ago and was clearly pretending not to know (in truth, his friend pointed it out as relevant, so he added it, but he had no real idea what it was and had long forgotten it), and that's why he wasn't being fair to Spike (despite the fact that he has said multiple times that he actually likes Spike).
Also, Tumblr is full of rape threats in, I think, both directions? I don't even know, it's fucking insane.
Spuffy fans, man.
Several people have suggested that.
They're not wrong.

I don't read the comments on all of Mark's reviews, but I've read a large handful (at least the first page's worth of comments on several reviews), and I wouldn't have expected "Smashed" to get this ugly. I expected disagreements and heated commentary, but it got downright vile in places.
And I don't envy you or the other moderators, or Mark, because I know you guys see ALL of the whack-ass shit that never gets approved, on top of the shitstorm that "Smashed" unleashed.
and that's why he wasn't being fair to Spike
Interesting. I noticed a comment directed to Mark that alluded to him knowing "future events," and Mark was all "I have no idea what you're talking about, I am unspoiled."
I thought it was weird that someone would even bring something like that up, but now it makes sense.
"Smashed" is fucked up, and I think that's pretty much the damn point of the episode. Bad choices all around in that one. (And yet? Jesus god, the sex is HOT. And I'm okay saying that, because fiction is complicated and fucked up. As are the people who consume said fiction. I can dig it while recognizing that it's hugely fucked up.)
Although I could live without Spike's goddamn pimp chain. *That's* just wrong.

Yeah, and there were people doing shitty things like replying to Mark or a moderator with something horrible and then deleting it. Of course, then sometimes a moderator would post it for everyone else to see, so that doesn't work.
A
lot
of people got banned yesterday. It was messy. But as Mark said, many of them were people we'd had our eye on for a while, and this was just the last straw.

Totally!
Also, this happened:
just got a horrifically creepy message from someone who threatened me for “bullying the spuffy fandom” and it was a screenshot of the google maps aerial shot of my old apartment in oakland
You are making me SO happy I never read the comments over there.
That's fucking insane.
I tried to say more, but I kept deleting and starting over and then gave up. That's just fucking insane.
Holy shit, what is wrong with people??
You are making me SO happy I never read the comments over there.
Thing is, the majority of the time, the comments are
really fun,
and I look forward to the comments more than Mark's posts. But a few bad apples...

Yeah, I usually dig the comments and their GIF-tasticness.
I didn't realize Spuffy fans were still around. It's been 10 years. Shouldn't they have moved on to Twilight?
Other than a few choice people, I skim the comments looking for the gifs.
