The public domain laws have been tweaked in recent years, driven in part by Disney paying a lot of money to keep Mickey Mouse out of the public domain.

I wouldn't start with The Body if they're unfamiliar with the show.

I think "Prophecy Girl" would be good. Once you get into the second season, the mythology starts to build and it's harder to just jump in. I watched it from the first episode, though, so what do I know.
