Jim, I think it's highly likely that, despite being of a previously non-Who-watching generation, I've done more background research than the target audience, which would indeed tend to make this episode more interesting to me. Fair point.
Daniel, since the Radio Times summary of episode 11,
"Boom Town", says "The Doctor comes across someone he thought was long dead", I think it's so likely as to be almost certain that something else got through from either the Dalek destruction or Gallifrey's destruction. taraljc on lj had a nice essay related to that, actually.
So episode 5 may also set a precident for furure eps. Interesting.

No, it's not. AFAIK, all the USians who are watching are downloading it.
Or, know somebody who has tivoed it from CBC.
Or live close enough to Canada to get CBC.
(DH is watching it. I have no time for TV beyond TDS and Robot Chicken anymore. DH is all, "You'll love it! It's like Buffy!" I respond, "No time! No time at all!")
