eta: just checked IMDB to verify. Yes. That is him. Why I even doubted myself, I don't know. That was/is one of my little sister's fav movies. I think I've seen it at least 15 times.
He also played Drew Barrymore's dad in FIRESTARTER.

I used to get him confused with Dennis Quaid back in the 1980s, that's why I remember him.

That's one of those tragic minor character roles that stay with you for a long time, even more than what happened with the protagonists. Sort of like the poor Brad Dourif's character on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
