Boxed Set, Vol. II: "It's a Cookbook...A Cookbook!!"
A topic for the discussion of Farscape, Smallville, and Due South. Beware possible invasions of Stargate, Highlander, or pretty much any other "genre" show that captures our fancy. Expect Adult Content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.
Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.
Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.
This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.
Yes, he was mentioned. Article was just about sci-fi characters that gay boys & girls love.
Oh, okay. It's just... you know. I don't actually read
Out
, but they do an awful lot of the putting of the sexy straight people on the cover, and it seemed a shame not to use an actual gay sci fi actor who plays an actual non-straight sci fi character. But my actual level of caring is so low as to barely move the caring needle off its rest, which I note b/c on reread my last post came off bitchy.
Interestingly, I don't include Starbuck in there. I like the character well enough but she doesn't ping me that way. Roslin, on the other hand... hehehehehehe.
I think Starbuck is the hottest female character to ever hot, narrowly out-hotting Faith, but I do have to admit to fanning myself whenever Roslin gets all ruthless. She is one hell of a woman.

For some reason, Out never puts people who are actually gay on the cover. I mean, I think it's happened once or twice, but I think it was an accident.
So is John Barrowman, who I hope at least gets mentioned in that article. Cause, you know. Gay off- and onscreen.
Precisely
my thought. Yes. And SGA's all-boy snog should have got mentioned too (and you could always add that Hewitt's played the Big Gay Love in movies before). But mostly John Barrowman, because
Captain Jack!!!!!
I was thinking that they need to do a Numb3rs crossover because it would be neat to see Greg Germann and Peter MacNicol as dueling astrophysicists
Oooh!
And now I need to see
Eureka.
Somehow. Um. I guess it'll be ahemable once it's airing, yes? Probably?
...I heart Peter MacNicol SO much. Just sat through ten minutes of Ali McBeal in the hopeful expectation of him, and was delighted by his scene. Promptly switched off, though, because the show does my head in. But MacNicol rocks, and Germann's very watchable.

or you could ask me really nicely and I would burn DVDs and send them to you ;)

Yeah. I don't actually read any of those mags (Out, Advocate, Curve, Girlfriend) anymore, but I'm not surprised.
From the article (quote is from second page):
For the most progressive and groundbreaking show in the genre, Battlestar’s lack of gay characters is acute. “Well, as far as you know you haven’t seen any gay characters,” says Eick, claiming that because the characters are still dealing with the annihilation of civilization, there’s not much room for gay story lines yet.
@@ You don't have to have 'gay story lines.' Just having visible gay characters would be a start, living their post-apocalyptic lives along with the rest of the crew. By the fact that there aren't any, BSG has just about guaranteed that the gayness has to be an issue, and that there will be 'coming out' stories. Which is fine, to deal with that stuff, but it'd be nice if the 'gender-blind' was complimented by 'orientation-blind.' IMHO.
eta should have read further:
“As we evolve through the series and get further away from that cataclysm, we may feel like it’s less of a stretch to start showing people getting involved with each other. Who’s to say who won’t turn out gay?”
(still David Eick)
Ah. So... being gay is like being a Cylon? Will there be 12 models? (I'm trying for a tone of gentle amusement here. I swear I've forgotten how to write a buffistas post. argh.)
Bamber champions the prospect: “There’s no reason, in a world that is gender-blind, on the Battlestars and across this fleet, that we haven’t had an overtly gay relationship come to fruition. It should be there, and it should be as unabashedly honest as the heterosexual relationships.”
Go team Bamber!
Yes, Go Team Bamber indeed!

Oooh! Seriously? That would be FABULOUS! If you have the time, that is - no worries if it's a hassle. But it would rock!
Thank you!

The new editor-in-chief sniped about that issue very defensively in his letter this month. He whinged that there are so few openly gay entertainers (has he never been to Broadway?), and that'swhy we may feel we've seen Ian McKellen and Rupert Everett in the gay press too often.
Bitch, please. McKellen's thoughts on drive-through laundry are more interesting than anything said in the monthly cover interviews with whatever hot young WB refugee Out features any given month. They could do a regular feature on him like King's page in Entertainment Weekly and I'd be thrilled.

piffle. It's the press of a button, seriously. You have a multiregion DVD player, yes?
I did enjoy Joe Morton, who I've always been a big fan of and have wondered why he's never taken off as a big star. He's much more fun to watch than just about anyone else in the show, except that Colin does have great potential, if they write better stuff for his character
yes, this. I love his character. I want him to fix something in my house! :)
Well, obviously Morton retired from CyberDyne Industries.
You have a multiregion DVD player, yes?
Yes!
Well, technically no, inasmuchas I gave away my DVD player before leaving Cairo - I figured it would cost about the same to buy a new one in Bangkok as it would to faff around with weight allowances and shipping and all that jazz. Plus the old one was a bit knackered. Buying a multiregional DVD player will be one of my first tasks in Bangkok. So,
technically
no, but for all intents and purposes yes.
