Is it because you do outside stuff, or because of the sort of outside stuff you do? Not that either is right, really, but unless you're championing some really rep-damaging stuff, what concern is it of theirs as long as you keep delivering inside stuff?
No clue. I think it's the outside stuff part of it - Barbara really doesn't like coping. But I suspect there's more going on.

Also - does withdrawing from your representation automatically cancel all deals? Can't you call up the editors and say "I'm still willing to do it on the terms agreed to". I'm not doubting you, just expressing horror at how the publishing business works.

She is. Oldest friend. But it's not her agency - she works with them and for them. It's Barbara's agency and Barbara's call.
Contract is, either side can sever at either time. That's pretty standard.
