You can, or you can look around. Depends on what you want, and if the place you're getting the latter has examples of the former that you like.
If you plan on wearing the rings together (on the same finger and all that jazz), the important part is to make sure they're a like metal. So, if your engagement ring is, say 18k gold, you'll want your wedding band to also be 18k gold. If your ring is platinum, you want your band to be platinum. (It's a hardness issue. Different metals and alloys wear differently, and mixing metals with something that will get that much in the way of wear is sort of advised against.)

The problem is, I want our bands to match, and I want his band to be gold, because that's sexy to me on a man. A gold wedding band. But some of the most gorgeous antique engagement rings he's found are platinum.
I think I want to wear them together sometimes, but not always.

I have an antique platinum set, so the band matches the engagement ring perfectly, and we didn't have to think about bands. Paul has a plain platinum band, which looks very nifty.
