I've never read it as a specific recipe, but rather any of the class of short (i.e. made with fat) dough breads (which would include shortcake, shortbread and biscuits, but egg-based cakes like gingerbread are a stretch). Or, you know, cute regional pronunciation thereof.

Yeah, well, it's an issue. But easy to avoid, if I hold my breath walking past the fishmarkets in Fell's Point. I don't like most seafood. Except shrimp.
