I feel like we lost the high moral ground on Variety ads right around GBAE.
Firefly 4: Also, we can kill you with our brains
Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.
CHRISTIANDOLLARSTORE WAS MY FAVORITE!
Ahem.
All right, this is way too long to cross post (and I have a feeling the comments will only make it worse) so my thoughts on "Serenity," centering on the political transformation of the crew, are here and all sorts of spoilery.
Ah. I'm not talking about spamming people's comment sections. To me, f-list implies these are the people whose LJ's you read. I find it ridiculous for people to gripe about what someone posts in their Livejournal when no one is forcing them to read that person's LJ. It's the same as saying "I'm never going to eat shrimp because everyone on my f-list keeps talking about how much they love shrimp and I'm sick of hearing about it." I mean, WTF? Eat shrimp or don't, and if you'd don't want to hear about shrimp all the time, de-friend the Shrimpistas and be done with it.
Eh. I'm good with it Kristen. Our point was always to reach industry folk, to speak to them directly, like Kellner, or Emmy voters, or Gail Berman.
This one is to get more people in seats, it would appear. Which I think one can accomplish more realistically by bringing a friend to see the film.
Yeah, I know we differ on that score. But it's the one that still sticks in my craw.
Kalshane, I think Kristen was talking about specific communities on LJ. Like a message board dedicated to one topic. So having several hits to what is essentially an open community by strangers who have no interest in you or your community, is frankly, really fucking annoying and spam. And also rude.
ita doesn't get it, but stuff like that can make me so not want to do what they're asking me to do, even if I would enjoy it. It kind of ruins it for me. I think the reason why I never read Harry Potter is because everyone says I should. And as was mentioned above, I, too, am contrary.
I'm insanely proud of that Variety ad for Firefly, though. I regretted it for some time, but got over that issue pretty recently.
I have a whole list of movies and books that I've never checked out largely because I got asked so many times if I'd seen/read them yet. (HP, yup.)
Which I think one can accomplish more realistically by bringing a friend to see the film.
To this I say: maybe. Will a single advertisement that reaches X # of people do more good than directly bringing Y # of people to the movie, with the assumption that X (Variety circulation numbers) is far higher than Y? What kind of actual take on it do they expect? And isn't Variety mostly for industry people, anyway, who are unlikely to be swayed to going to see a movie by a single ad?
I took a total of 10 people to see it, myself. Paid for all but 2 of them, actually, because most of them were my family or people I owed money to.
I am also proud of the FF ad. Though, given my feelings about the GBAE ad, I'm kind of surprised I ever signed on to do it.
