I'm wondering how the mainstream critics will treat Serenity.
Firefly 4: Also, we can kill you with our brains
Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.
I'm wondering how the mainstream critics will treat Serenity.
Sometimes I fantasize about Serenity pulling in $100M the first weekend and the Eberts sit up and say "WTF?".
I don't think it'll get quite there, but I'd expect a neat-looking space movie to crack $40 million opening weekend without several hundred thousand dedicated fans who'll pimp it to their friends and see it again and again.
Matt, why don't you think it'll get there? Not being adversarial, just curious. I have no hope at all, myself, just because I want it so much.
I would be very surprised if it didn't do at least 15mil at the US boxoffice in its opening weekend. Add to that the boxoffice from the rest of the world, and this will easily make a very good profit for Universal. A trilogy (at least) is in the bag.
I have to agree with evil jimi but, I think opening weekend will be closer to $20mil and the second weekend will only have a 25-30% drop off.

Maybe because Batman Begins with the whole Warner Brothers publicity machine working in deep saturation mode and a lead character that's instantly recognizable to just about everyone on earth didn't get there either? Look, I'm optimistic about the movie's chances for success, but expecting it to break nine figures in three days is just setting yourself up for unnecessary heartbreak.
Well, considering only 1 film in history has earned a 100+ million on opening weekend, I think it's fair to say Serenity won't stand a chance at getting that much.
btw Serenity came in second on a reader poll at Boxofficemojo.com for most anticipated movie of 2005. Beaten only by Revenge of the Sith.
Did she catch the bug, Wolfram?
Heh. Windsparrow, I got the whole fam infected.
I have to say, the 30 second Serenity spot is awesome. Seriously. Much better than the 3 minute trailer. If I had never heard of any of this, it would definitely make me sit up and take notice.
Matt, good reasons!
The optimism of others cheers me, but I fear disappointment. I know nothing about box office numbers; I'm just hoping it makes enough at the end of the day to get us more movies. And enough on opening weekend to impress whoever needs to be impressed. I don't expect it to make Star Wars money.
