We did the Illiad and the Odyssey in highschool, but I don't recall ever hearing "in medias res" before, nor do I have a clue what it means.
It means "in the middle of things." You start your story in the middle (the war's been going on for years, the Cylons have been following for days) rather than the traditional method of starting at the beginning.

On the TTTEE commentary, Peter Jackson accuses Phillipa Boyens of being the head "Bean Stalker," the term the LotR crew used for the on-set fans of SB. She doesn't agree, but she doesn't deny it, either.
