Firefly 4: Also, we can kill you with our brains
Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.
I'm back from Serenity. I loved it, but I'm not convinced it quite walked the tightrope between what fans know and what the general public needs to know to follow the action. Further discussion belongs in Spoilers, obviously.
Back from Serenity also. I really enjoyed it. Ginger, I think it might reach more people than we suspect. I hope it does.
By the way, Toronto got Sean Maher. Woo! I'll get my photos up from the Toronto Browncoats pre-Shindig tomorrow.
We got no actors/writers/etc. in Cincy, but we *did* get small goodie bags (ziploc size) of swag -- plastic dinosaurs, along with little printouts of Wash's dinosaur mini-drama ("This land is good...." "Curse your sudden yet inevitable betrayal!" etc.), trading cards with a picture of Joss on them, different Firefly-themed magnets and stickers, and candy with Firefly-themed stickers on them.
The bags of swag were courtesy of the southern Ohio browncoats.
After the movie, we collected official swag in the way of programs and keychains. And since today (well, officially yesterday -- June 23) was not only my birthday but also Joss' birthday, the theater sang Happy Birthday to him, and after the movie there were birthday cards in the lobby to sign.
I (of course) signed it by mentioning that it was my birthday, too, and that seeing Serenity early was a fabulous birthday present.
SA and I hooked up with LingMao, and after the movie we had a quick beer at the Irish pub next door to the theater. All in all a satisfying evening. With swag!
I got a rock!
We did have a big Happy Birthday card for Joss that everyone signed, however.
No spoilers here, but suffice to say that Batman Begins is now the second best movie I've seen this summer.
You guys didn't have Serenity keychains or programs? I figured they were official studio swag (as opposed to the baggies the southern Ohio browncoats put together, which were so obviously done with enthusiasm and love, which was cool to see).
We did get programs and keychains, and my keys are now hooked on the latter. I was actually following up Jon's post about Sean Maher being in Toronto—I was writing when your post appeared.
Just as well Sean wasn't at ours though, as my date thought he was really hot. Like, I-might-have-been-forced-to-get-a-ride-home-in-a-cab hot. Sign me (or, more properly, Sean) up for another toaster!
We got swag too, both studio and Browncoat, and Sean gave autographs and posed for photos with every last fan, he was really gracious. The woman I was sitting next to assured me that Sean was much hotter in person, you'll be glad to know, Matt.
BTW, I wore my "Got Joss?" shirt (I got it from Kiba's site [link] ), which drew many envious comments from fans.
Steph, as not really a Firefly Fan, what did you think of the movie?

I liked Jayne much better than I do in the series. And Zoe -- well, Gina Torres is both stunningly beautiful and a damn good actress.
Mostly, I think it's accessible to people who have never seen an episode of Firefly, though there are some areas where I think not enough backstory was provided to make things make sense for those who haven't seen the series. But still, an overall good movie.
