So glad to have Gus back home stateside.
I had the same ear experience as Allyson, though we did it at home. It was scary what came out, but it was soooo nice having the audio clarity again.
I had a very interesting conversation at the Zam Zam Room last night with the bartender. I've found that most cities do not provide you with the kind of bartender or cab driver that one is familiar with from movies. However, the bartender last night was deeply philosophical and we were talking about Mahler and 19th Century Russian Literature and the notion that Realism (as a genre) was merely a cultural construct.
OK, just tried to go to the caf and got swamped with Kill!Annoying!People!
I think I'll wait until it empties out. I really need to not let myself get this in need of food. It makes me kind of nuts. It's kind of like pms.
did everyone at the bar slide away from you two?
One of the best "Life in Hell" lines evah!
The capper was attributing the quote to Nietzsche.

Yeah. I was gonna mention that. But I wasn't sure how to spell 'Nietzsche.'

Nope. Actually, I spent most of the time talking to Brita, a women I'd seen there before. We also had a wide ranging conversation about slaves who escaped to Indian tribes, Vermeer, Chicago and geneology. Almost as fun as the one night I talked to a guy who was in "the stone business" (which at first I presumed meant jewels, but actually referred to fancy granite type surfacing rocks used by designers), who traveled the world looking for cool new trendy rocks to be used as counter tops. Also he was an expert on Roman history and had a lot of opinions about the emperors.
(N.b. His responsibility, as landlord, is to shovel or have someone do it. It's snowed 6 times since November and to our knowledge he has not moved a single flake. Because "he's very busy" and lives inconveniently far away.)
We clear the stairs and sidewalk and deduct $25 from our rent for each "snow occurance." I did that at my last apartment, and when I moved in with Tom, I asked the property manager if I could do that, and she was psyched. So this way, we know it gets done, done right, and we get some money to offset our skyrocketing heating bills.
We just put a note in with the rent check with the dates we shovelled. No problemo.
these are not the people I meet in bars, but actually I don't talk to strangers so I guess I wouldn't know.
