Huh.

It has been estimated that during a one-week period, a cruise ship may produce approximately eight tons of solid waste, one million gallons of graywater, 210,000 gallons of sewage, and 25,000 gallons of bilgewater.

Gah.

Now tagless for your comfort.

I never knew the difference between cake flour and regular flour. But I just got back from the grocery and found that it carries not one, but two different brands of cake flour. Top shelf.

Pretty rough, but it's not as if all that wouldn't be getting back into the environment anyway.

I think you're being overoptimistic. A lot of that is generated not by the passengers themselves but by cruise ship operations. Also, there's a ton of food waste generated by cruise ships, like for instance from those midnight buffets. A friend of mine used to be a cruise ship photographer, and she said they would throw the untouched food overboard, because once it's been on the table it can't be re-used.

Things may have changed, but there's a reason both states and federal governments are passing laws regulating cruise ship discharge.

Ah, I was thinking mostly in terms of sewerage and waste water. But you're right, there's probably a lot of solid garbage that wouldn't be otherwise generated.

Sure, but it's being put back untreated. And while the ocean is large, depending on where they discharge it, it can still pose a problem to shoreline communities. You don't want to know what the Navy used to dump into the lagoon on Diego Garcia.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

It's okay, Lee. I'll make do with what I have if I can't find cake flour nearby. But thanks.

I did get your e-mail, and will work on it presently.

Blockbuster to die? I hope it doesn't take Netflix with it.

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

In case it helps, my flour is from Swan's, and comes in a red box. I think looking near the cake mixes, which someone mentioned upthread, might be a good idea.

Sadly, your wet men link didn't work for me.

I'll check Bristol Farms again. But Ralph's definitely didn't have it this morning.

Being the truck watcher is the best job ever.

I need to keep that in mind next time I'm asked. Because I hate moving.

Safeway had cake flour. And tsunami donation cups they were actively promoting.

I managed to do everything but clean. Miracle of miracles. Am now paying bills and I don't know what my rent is (goes up if I go off lease, which I'm doing because ...well, if $720 loss a year doesn't convince me to start house shopping, nothing will.) Also need to switch gas to my name. Sigh. OTOH, I'm relieved to see that only the vacant apartments are using less gas than I am. Somehow I've become ok with my apartment being 68 -70. Of course, it hasn't gotten damned cold and blustery yet. It hit 70 yesterday!
