Cab is more expensive anyway--it's only $12.50 each way if you book a roundtrip--the cabs charge per person, something like $26.

I'm thinking I'll shuttle to the hotel but cab it back to the airport at ::gulp:: 5:00 am on Monday.

You have to reserve it.
My experience in NOLA has been that you can take the first available shuttle from the airport, but you have to reserve to have them come pick you up at the hotel for the return trip.
I'll be arriving Thursday morning.
