I will never fly AirTran again.
Two of the worst flying experiences I ever had going back and forth to Philadelphia. I've been more comfortable on a schoolbus.

Plan what to do, what to wear (you can never go wrong with a corset), and get ready for the next BuffistaCon: San Francisco, May 19-21, 2006! Everything else, go here! Swag!

Other carriers usually match AirTran. My method is to check for sales on AirTran, which drives the market, and then fly on Delta.
ND, you might check Southwest. I know they fly nonstop from Raleigh to BWI, which is only about 45 minutes north of DC. If someone couldn't pick you up, there are ways to take public transportation down. Southwest's rates are cheap, the planes are pretty comfy (a big step up from AirTran, IMO), and it's a lot quicker (and often less expensive) than the train.
That said, I love travel by train. I think it depends on which one sounds more appealing to you and which one allows you more time to visit with people.
I am a big fan of trains, especially considering how much I ride in them over here. I'm not sure I'd choose a train over a plane in every circumstance, but I do like them.
It's so rare to do trains on this coast that I think Ima gonna do the train. Also, the train is much easier to get a ticket at the last moment and that way I can be a little bit on the flexible side with my plans.

This is true. It's how I got to the airport on time from the F2F without knowing anything about how to get there. That, and JenP, goddess among women.

Hey everyone!
Yo, ND, I dropped you a comment to email me and you didn't so I came a lookin' and here you are!
What do you want to do in the Triangle area? Should I be coordinating a Triangle-ista get-together? When do you get here, when are you leaving, all that fun shit?
Inquiring minds and hostesses wanna know.
As far as train vs. plane, I've never done it but my brother has. Train is nice if you have the time. It's not that much longer than flying if you factor in airport time. Okay, still probably a couple hours longer.
eta: please email me at profile addy, since board and work are unmixy things. Thanks.
Hi!
I just flew in from Chicago, and boy do I have pictures.
Flickr, the site where these pics are posted, was acting weird for me earlier, so you may have to reload the page a few times to see anything.
It also isn't labeled yet.
Very nice piccies, Tom. Stupid RL road blocks to being able to be there. Next time, I guess.
In case anyone is wondering, each glow-stick there represents a finished drink. There were others still being consumed when the picture was taken and some people chose non-illumiscent booze.
