oh joy! Oh Rapture ! I have a brain!

cool . Looks like a number of people on the TIVO forums have had the problem - and no one is sure if it is a TIVO or Cable upgrade problem ...

I'll have to try it after it stops recording for tonight

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

I'm guessing a cable upgrade because my TiFaux is pulling the exact same nonsense. Will try the fix tonight.

You can't leave me to my own devices; my devices are Nap and Eat. -Zenkitty

So I downloaded the Ubuntu disk image and am posting from it now. It's not permanently installed yet, I just booted from the CD for a test run, but so far I'm liking it.

I wonder if S's old iBook will be able to see this computer now, and possibly the printer, through the router we use to share the DSL.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

And my TiVo that is connected to the cable box had channel-changing problems last night!

However, the other TiVo didn't come back from a blackout quite right -- all I'm getting is a loud noise from the hard drive and the empty TiVo Central screen moving very slowly. I'm leaving it on in the hopes that its doing something mysterious but healing with hard disk space....

ETA: Now it's acting normal, if a bit loud. So I guess I'll eke out a little more use of it. Really, I'm just waiting until the poor thing dies so that I can justify getting a new one....

well, the cable box restart didn't do it, but it looks like the TIVO restart may have fixed the channel changing problem

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

Does anyone have any experience mixing ATA and SATA hard drives in the same machine? My motherboard has connectors for both, but so far I've only installed ATA drives. I'm in the market for a new drive, and I'm considering adding a SATA.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Just out of curiosity - how big is your bookmark file?

I use the google sync thingie for Firefox, so each computer has the same copy of all my bookmarks. Anyway, my bookmarks.html file is 292 KB, and my bookmarks.xml is 286 kb.

I'm on my work computer at the moment - the Firefox bookmark file on my XP machine is here:

C:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.m13\bookmarks.html

My bookmark file here at work is 361 Kb. At home it's 785 Kb.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

ATA is the same as IDE, right? I've had no problems connecting both to the same machine. It's no different from connecting another IDE drive. Just make sure your BIOS has SATA enabled. On some motherboards, it defaults to "disabled".
