Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Leopard (the new version of the Mac OS that comes out next week, IIRC spring) has a time machine:

New in Leopard, Time Machine takes you beyond the backup. An automated system that regularly backs up everything on your Mac — music, photos, movies, documents — Time Machine also takes you back in time to restore your system. Enter Time Machine’s browser and look for files you may have deleted or lost, flip through multiple versions of the same project, or get a snapshot of your entire system from day one.

Cool.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions/experiences on the relative reliability and quality of Toshiba notebooks versus Compaq notebooks?

Our wings are not tired

I've got two Toshiba notebooks that I've been using as rentals machines for the past few years and I've had no problems. They are out of the Satellite line.

I also had a Compaq that so seemed to be doing great, but it was stolen about 5 months after I got it, so I don't know about longevity on that one.

A friend of mine just had his HP(/Compaq) motherboard give out on him. But it was under warranty, and they guaranteed a turnaround time of three days once it got to them. And they shipped him a box.

I just hooked my TiVo into my network using the TiVo USB wireless connector. My home network is set up to be a DHCP server. My router sees the TiVo and has assigned it an IP address, however, my TiVo says that it cannot get an address via DHCP. So I've set up my TiVo to use a static IP address, and my router to assign a static IP address to the TiVo's MAC number. This seems to be working.

Any ideas why the TiVo might not see that DHCP is actually working?

ita - you had a really bad experience with Dell in laptop service. Any other companies out there with decent machine and decent on-site service (desktop not laptop)? Or is Dell still the best choice? How about the big box stores with on-site service. I have a neighbor buying a desktop. She could get her choice of most major brands or a store brand, and buy an on-site service contract with either Best Buy or Circuit City. (Circuit City has better prices on both the boxes and the service contracts.)

Anyone done this? Good service? Awful service? You don't know?
