I've had Vonage since I moved in here. I have a very fast cable modem connection and I've had good call quality on it.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Hmm, crap. We get Earthlink DSL, and Earthlink also offers VoIP, but apparently if you have DSL, you need to keep your old phone active and get a new number, neither of which are acceptable alternatives to what we're doing now.
Yeah, if you are on DSL then you have to have a phone line anyway. Are you planning to switch to cable modem before you do the VoIP thing?
Well, we hadn't been planning on switching, but I guess now we have to consider it.
Yeah, you can't have DSL without a phone line, so there's no real point in doing VoIP over it.
You know, local phone companies have started responding to the VOIP threat. You might be able to get a cheaper plan from them if you just ask.
Also sometime you can a shared cell phone plan (too phones) for less than the cost of a land line. Of course then you have the problem with dropped calls. Got my Mom a Virgin pay as you go phone for her trip to NY. High quality connections as long as they last, but they do seem to drop out occasionally.
Huh.
There's a new version of TiVo Desktop available today. It's version 2.3 (for Windows). And it does some nifty new tricks.
If you have an iPod, a PSP, a Treo, or other portable video device you'll want to check it out. Not only can you tell it to automatically transfer new recordings of your favorite shows to your PC, with a small upgrade it'll also convert those files automatically to play back on your favorite portable device.
The upgrade? While TiVo Desktop 2.3 is free (as always), and the automatic transferring of programs to the PC is also free, the ability to convert those recording for portables has a small cost. It's $24.95 to unlock that ability (there's stuff in there that we have to license, and we can't give that away to everyone for free). But it's a one time fee...you pay once, and you can convert your recordings for playback on your portable automatically, every time they're transfered.
But is there TiVo to Go for the Mac? No. Of course not. t blows raspberry at TiVo
