Buffistechnology 2: You Made Her So She Growls?
Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Putting widgets on the desktop is (or, at least, was, when it first came out - I could be outdated now, I'm not sure) a hack, not intended for actual use. So, my guess would be that the answer to your question is "no, not really."
That said, there are almost certainly programs out there that would give you weater information and ARE intended to live on the desktop. Versiontracker might help. Or, you could even install Yahoo! Widgets, formerly known as Konfabulator, which is almost certainly the program that inspired Dashboard in the first place.
I just got a 160G la cie hard drive so I can finally fix my computer issues!
So I have a question or three before I start.
I have to wipe the disk and start anew, which I've never done.
I know I need to transfer all my documents and such to the la cie, as well as a couple of programs for which I have no disk, like my FTP and such.
But then I think I'm supposed to partition the hard drive on my computer. Is that really necessary with the la cie?
Appreciate any advice anyone has while I go and research on my own!
I have a live journal question. I've noticed that some journals have customized pictures at the top. How do I do that? Or at least point me in the direction in the lj faq. I've been searching that thing for a while and still have no idea.
Allyson, if you'd like I'd be happy to come over and walk you through it one of these evenings. I made it through January and now have some time again in Feb. Also, now that I've got time again we can finish up your recording if you'd like.
Aw, ND, you're so sweet. I think I accomplished everything almost correctly.
I say almost because I lost three things in the move: My ISP, FTP, and ALL OF MY iTUNES.
Seriously. All my writing, emails, art, all those files which meant the most of me were perfectly fine, but I made a mistake somewhere and mu iTunes songs are just gone. I was in a fetal position for a few minutes, took a deep breath, repeated "First World Problem" several times, and now, I am calm.

YARGH, Allyson. First World Problem, sure, but still a major pain! Post to the Music thread if you need replacements...
Are you sure you lost the iTunes music files themselves? Maybe it's just the database that didn't get carried over, in which case it can easily be regenerated.
Yes, there are no MP3s at all anywhere on my computer.
And just to cover the "stupid question" area, you're sure they were in mp3 format, and not m4a?
Oh yeah, I checked both. Not a stupid question, Kristen pointed it out to me when i was first in shock.
